Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament using water to symbolise the washing away of sin and becoming a member of God's family. It signifies a commitment to being a follower of Jesus Christ. Some of us have been baptised as infants or children, with our parents or Godparents making promises on our behalf. Others of us have been baptised as adults, where we are able to make those promises ourselves. Whatever your situation, we would be happy to have a discussion with you about baptism.

Infant baptism

Firstly, congratulations on the arrival of your precious child! We join with you in giving thanks to God for their safe arrival.  This is a time of great joy and celebration for your family.

The decision to have your child baptised is significant and shows that you recognise the importance of Jesus in your child's life.

Godparents or sponsors also have a significant role in the life of their Godchild. They make a promise to God that they will do all they can to ensure the child is brought up as a Christian.

Adult baptism

This is an extremely exciting and precious time in your journey of faith. Adult baptism can be celebrated a little differently to infant baptism, and this will be explained in more detail when you meet with the Rector (Priest).

Baptisms are usually conducted at the 10:00am Sunday Family service.

What do I need to do?

If you would like us to walk with you on this exciting journey, follow these simple steps:

  • Contact the Rector(Priest) through the Church Office to arrange an appointment and discuss any questions you may have.
  • Be willing to undertake Christian education concerning baptism and what it means.
  • Plan ahead, and think about the date you would prefer for baptism. Don't leave it to the last minute.
  • Godparents or sponsors. Consider who you would choose, and approach them before meeting with the Rector (Priest). Remember they have a great responsibility in encouraging your child in the life and faith of the Church. (Adults presenting for baptism do not need to nominate Godparents or sponsors).
  • If you are not a member of the HTK community already, consider coming along to one of our services to meet the people of our welcoming community.  (Traditional services at 8:00am Sundays; Contemporary services at 10:00am Sundays).
